at the foot of the bed

there at the foot of the bed
he watches her body breathe
her tired old record still turns
her cigarette burns as she sleeps

he wants her to die
and stop that needle from clicking
the clocks in the house are frozen like him
they’re still ticking but they lie

watch that empty dress running down the street
toss penny prayers in a lake
draw circles in the sunday paper
he knows she knows he’ll never leave

he wants to have a dream
something of his own he can count on
to sit on the couch hand in hand
with no fog and no stench
and watch cop shows
